By Dave Gousmett.
There were 69 entries this year, which was slightly up from last year. The weekend was fine although windy and there over 2000 koi carp shot with a total weight of more than 5 tonnes. The competition for the Teams prize was essentially decided when the 'Brownwater Stalkers' weighed in their catch on the Saturday. Kevin Low & Greg Gourley had 239 koi between them to take a commanding lead. The medals for the heaviest koi carp were still open though with John Gow leading narrowly from Jason Loane, but Brent Davidson weighed in an 8.4 kg fish on the Sunday to take gold.
Joshua Saunderson took out the Solid Energy Junior Cup for the third year in a row wit ha 5 kg koi while Shaun Rich had the heaviest white carp at 5.9 kg. The heaviest other fish was a 3.4 kg hybrid koi/goldfish cross shot by Jordan Morland.
Sundays total of 592 koi carp was well down from the 1483 shot on the Saturday giving a final tally for the weekend of 2075 koi carp weighing 5,143.1 kg for an average weight of 2.48 kg. Theis made it the best year since 2006 and our 3rd best ever in the 20 years the event has been held.
This event was again very well supported by our sponsers : Thanks go to the Huntly Rotary Club, Peter Sweetman and Reel Fishing, Solid Energy, Hunting & Fishing and the Department of Conservation as well as Cajun Archery, Muzzy and AMS Bowfishing who donated a brand new $800.00 fishing bow plus retiever reel as the top ballot prize. There was enough bowfishing and hunting gear and clothing supplied for all the entrants to go home wit ha prize. |
