World Koi Carp Classic 2008

2008 World Koi Carp Classic results
from Dave Gousmett
There were 66 entries this year, which was down slightly from last year. Saturday was fine but windy and the best fish weighed in was an 8.7 kg white koi carp shot by Dennis Powell. Several teams were in contention with around 200 kg of carp. Heavy rain overnight cleared to a fine, still Sunday morning so there was no excuse to stay in bed. The highlight of the day was a huge grass carp shot by a junior, Cameron MacDonald, on Lake Whangape. It weighed 26.23 kg and was 1.19 metres long. Not only was it the heaviest fish ever weighed in at a carp classic but it also made number one in the Record Book.
The total for the weekend was 1770 koi weighing 4,269.5 kg for an average weight of 2.41 kg.
Dennis Powell’s big white carp shot on Saturday held on to take the Koi Carp Trophy. The Solid Energy Junior Cup went to Joshua Saunderson for the second year in a row, this time with a 7.2 kg koi while Jason Loane and Dennis Hayfield were also repeat winners with the heaviest team total earning them the newly refurbished Department of Conservation Cup.

This event was again very well supported by our sponsors: Thanks to the Huntly Rotary Club, Solid Energy, Peter Sweetman and Reel Fishing, Retravison Huntly, Placemakers Huntly and the Department of Conservation as well as Cajun Archery, Muzzy and AMS. Donated goods included tool bags, fishing rods, hardware, bowfishing arrows and fish points as well tee-shirts and hats. Most entrants went home with a prize.
Thanks also to Graeme Warrender and Peter Curtis for their construction efforts, Theo Ryks for the use of his tractor to drive ‘Stormin Norman’ all weekend and special thanks to the Weavers Park management committee for allowing us to use their magnificent venue.
Next year will be the 20th annual carp classic and we are hoping to make it a big event so plan to be in Huntly on the first weekend of November 2009 to help us celebrate.
