Broadheads and Hope is dedicated to all members of the New Zealand
Bowhunters Society, past, present and future. From the early pioneers of the
1940s and 50s who made their own bows, arrows and broadheads to the modern bowhunter
who enjoys the benefit of the latest technology, bowhunting in New Zealand has changed a
great deal-and yet it has not changed at all.
The challenge of bowhunting is like no other and it is this call that draws
and binds us. On any given day, hunting with a bow can take you from the pinnacle of exuberant
success to the depths of despair and frustration and at the end of the day, whichever extreme
guides your thoughts on the way back to camp, you know that tomorrow brings another chance and
exactly the same challenge and in the morning you will answer its call.
The New Zealand Bowhunters Society was
constituted On June 24 1955 but organised bowhunting in this country can be traced back to the formation of a
field section within the Auckland archery Club in 1945 and no doubt a few keen bowhunters were stalking hills in earlier years still.
With members throughout the country the New Zealand Bowhunters Society
needed a regular publication to maintain contact and pass on information to
its members. This was achieved by newsletter then in more recent years by
the Society's own magazine. New Zealand Bowhunter.
Stories of the hunt and game photo's are the mainstay of this magazine and the quality of both is outstanding in a lot of cases. Each year at the New Zealand Bowhunters Society annual tournament one of the awards presented is the Tiger Loch-head Trophy for literary excellence.
This award was first presented in 1985 and the stories in this book
represents only the tip of the iceberg as far as our stories are concerned
but is an excellent representation of the bowhunting achievements of members
of the New Zealand Bowhunters Society. Broadheads and Hope is the second book to be published by the Society.
The first was entitled The Game Seekers published in 1982.
Broadheads and Hope can be purchased for $25.00 plus postage, it is only
available through the New Zealand Bowhunters Society.
